SummaryPRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Cost Accountant position will primarily be responsible for ensuring that inventory is properly valued, any risks are identified, controls are in place and functioning in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

WORKING PROCEDURES:
Transactions
• Calculate the full absorption ratio each month and compare the results to the general ledger. Prepare the adjusting journal entry if required.
• Review standard costs for validity and update the ERP when necessary.
• Monitor inventory transactions for outliers and research any discrepancies discovered.
• Review inventory for obsolete and slow-moving parts and ensure that the reserve is adequate.
• Reconcile the inventory reports from the ERP to the general ledger monthly.
• Calculate and prepare the monthly journal entry for the scrap material generated.
• Review inventory held at suppliers for reasonableness each month.
• Review the perpetual inventory reports for parts with negative quantities.
• Preform inventory price testing to ensure that valuations are correct.
• Analyze cost of goods sold each month.
• Perform all phases of fixed asset accounting, including purchases, disposals, and monitoring the budget.

Reporting
• Assist with the preparation of the monthly and annual financial statements.
• Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
• Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
• Provide financial analysis as needed.

Compliance
• Ensure that all accounting policies related to inventory are valid and being followed, recommend changes as necessary.
• Ensure that daily cycle counts are occurring, monitor the results, and participate in the counts if necessary.
• Schedule and conduct the quarterly meetings of the Material Review Board.
• Assist with the annual financial audit.
• Assist with physical inventory accounts.

SCOPE, PURPOSE AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
The scope of the Cost Accountant position is larger in a small business. The successful candidate could be asked to perform other duties outside of a traditional cost accountant.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Equivalent required

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
This is an entry level position. Some experience working in accounting or financial analysis is a plus. Experience with a manufacturing company is a plus.
